Clematis florida “Fond Memories”™
Clematis florida in its various forms is undoubtedly one of the most
exciting and dramatic species and its cultivars are much sought after.
Clematis florida has been long cherished in Japanese gardens but
seen little until recently coming into cultivation and listed by
Thorncroft Clematis Nursery, England.
Clematis florida “Fond Memories”™ is unusual due to the large single flower (5-7
inches diameter) is the palest pink-white with rosy-lavender margins and tips
on the front side with darker lavender stamens forming a prominent boss. The
flower exhibits a beautiful satin sheen. The flower’s complete reverse side is
a very deep rosy-lavender and has three veins of maroon on each tepal. Excellent
subject for container planting provided that the pots do not become too hot or
dry out.
The leaves are dark green and glossy divided into 5-9 leaflets. A moderately
vigorous growing clematis. The cultivar can be semi-evergreen to mostly deciduous.
Prune
Clematis florida ‘Fond Memories’ as a group 2, down to a strong pair of buds
up to 20 inches above the soil surface. It likes well drained but moist soil
in a warm sunny and sheltered location once planted in the garden. It is possible
to minimize problems with pests, diseases and physiological problems such as
snails, slugs, aphids, earwigs, mildew and Clematis wilt with readily
available options.
