attendees name Hydrangea Best New Plant
Hydrangea macrophylla ssp.
serrata 'Mikata Yae' from Pride of Place
Plants was named best new variety at the NMPRO New Plant Pavilion,
which took last week at the ANLA Convention and Executive Learning
Retreat in Hawaii. Voting took place on site and on the Internet.
'Mikata Yae' produces 1-inch, blue, star-shaped, double florets
from midspring to midsummer. It's a compact, midsized shrub
that should reach 4 feet high in 10 years. It's hardy in Zones
5-9. It grows best in moist, well-drained soil with pH from 4.5-6.
It prefers afternoon shade. 23 plants were showcased at this year's
event. 'Mikata Yae' is one of the Masters
Collection™ of unique Hydrangeas.

Masters Collection ™
Watch for the introduction of our Collection of Hydrangea
cultivars from the Breeder members of the Japan Hydrangea Society.
25 cultivars
will be offered for sale, starting in the summer of 2003. Working
closely with the Japan Hydrangea Society President , Mr. Yamamoto
and the Secretary, Mr. Sugumoto, we feel we have put together
an offering that will attract the attention of our Trade and
the Home Gardener.

Barry Fretwell Collection ™
Pride of Place Plants Inc. is proud
and pleased to announce an agreement with Mr. Barry Fretwell
and Mrs. Patricia Fretwell, from Devon, England, to promote and
market their fine collection of Clematis Cultivars. The intial
10 cultivars will be followed by many more diverse and interesting
cultivars.
Mr. Fretwell is a well known plant breeder and author. His 2 books
on Clematis have been extremely well received in his home country
of England. His breeding efforts have included much of the work
done on the texensis species of Clematis and many are currently
available around the world.
